Might be the PSU, but most likley a failing CPU cooling fan. As the CPU starts to do work, it heats up very quickly. To protect the CPU from damage, the PC shuts down.
Checkout the latest copy 'PC Pro' mag, it's got a whole section on how to fix a faulty PC.

LIke stated above try the boot disk.. it shoudl have come with your computer. some newer computers have it built in. You can also do this: Unplug all accessories.. except keyboard and mouse and monitor.. but any thing else like a camera or external drive and then reboot the system (power off then on). Once that is done.. perform a system restore (if the system logs in) by pressing F1 key and clicking system restore (shoudl be somewhere on the right half of the screen) i would go back a few days.. Good luck....

It may be a virus or spyware. Boot into Safe Mode...Reboot and hit F8 until a screen comes up. Use your arrow keys to choose Safe Mode if you have a anti-virus scanner. If not choose Safe Mode with Networking. Then do a online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

does your computer get to windows?
If it does start the computer in safe mode and run msconfig and do either a diagnostic start up or go to the start up tab and deselect things that you know should be running (or that you can start later).
If your computer does not get into windows then go into your BIOS and turn off your auto restart on error option and see what that does.

it is possible that the processor is over heating. (It takes about 5 seconds if the fan isn't running)

Could be your power supply that is dying. You will have to replace the hardware.
