Bringing up win task manager, reveals svchost.exe is running 5 times at the same time. Mem usage is from 17,000k down to about 200k for the last one. Is it normal for this programe to run 5 versions of itself?

no it means the programme task manager that you are running isn't detecting the programme abort the programme or restart your machine its using the internal pc's memory cpu commands and swallowing the memory thus resulting in your pc playing funny what has happened is the programme you are running isn't functioning correctly and has had problem core problems and may need for it to be addressed relevantly abort all the applications and just start from fresh with the programme...

It's not unusual for it to be running. Many Windows apps use it.

Yes it fine, just make sure one is not svvchost (double v) which is spy ware and should be removed
