Your right, the meaning has been lost, it is now how much money can one spend. It has become all sales oriented. The media has made it a holiday "spending frenzy". It is a problem for retailers to not have this money which has been proved on the news that the sales of items is the most important thing in Christmas. This is sad, huh? Merry Christmas. Be with friends, celebrate Jesus' birthday. Don't spend too much money, especially if you can't afford it.

The meaning of christmas is whatever you make of it. It can be the birth of Jesus, it can be to have a family celebration. In Japan it is a holiday for lovers.

A long time ago the church decided to celebrate christmas on midwinter, so that the common people would stop with their 'pagan' traditions. Between now and then people have just added more meanings for christmas, so I guess it partially failed.

It's supposed to be to celebrate Peace on Earth, and Goodwill to All.

That should transcend all religious and cultural barriers, but sadly doesn't seem to much anymore.
