Origin of the term "Goodness" ?

I'm doing an essay about euphemism and I would like to know the origin of the euphemism "goodness" for God.
Is it a substitution of the term "Godness" ?
Does this word "godness" exist or did it exist ?

My understanding is that Goodness! is just a shortened version of Goodness Sakes! Which is an old exclamation from days of yore...that is all I know...I don't think the word "Godness" is a real thing...
