To the first approximation, the Earth is like a bar magnet. The south and north poles are where the magnetic lines of force originate and terminate. Going to the second approximation runs the risk of trouble, because local amonalities (such as iron concentrations in the crust) disturb the idea of the Earth as a dipole.

no really the answer is not percise. but they are the point of the earth that does not spin. Think of it like holding a ball in your hand now on the top is the north and the bottom is the south. Spin the ball between your two hands each holding with one finger. where your fingers are is where the north and the south pole are.
