It had burnt astronomer to death centuries ago, now it's dogmas had to be changed.

The church has repeatedly been forced to admit that its own teachings were wrong and accept discoveries in astronomy. This started in the 16th century when it was confirmed that the Earth orbits the sun, and continues into modern times with the Vatican employing a group of astronomers to keep the church up to date on what's actually known about the universe, and then changing its teachings to reflect current knowledge.

They used it to make the Gregorian calender.

Other than that I think they mostly just made it up, the Sun going around the Earth for example.
