Im currently learning to drive and its been a long, slow process. i recently bought myself a wee car (petrol, i know now i should've bought a diesel) as id taken 10 lessons but wasnt getting any better as i wasnt getting any practice.
im very nervous and i panic that im holding up traffic (because i am usually) and people are so mean and beep at me and this makes me even more nervous.
I just dont understand this whole biting point crack, i cant hill start, i can just about reverse, i am forever stalling and overall ive no confidence.
has anyone got any tips for me?? ive got another driving lesson in the morning and im bloody dreadin it.

first tip....RELAX don't panic when your driving, it can cause accidents...take a deep breath and just do your lesson....being nervous will not help at all....just do the lesson and pass with flying colours...practise makes perfect...ignore the ones who hoot their horns at you...your a learner don't forget, just like them when they were having lessons...before you know it you'll be on the road driving in a carefree manner...go with the flow hun, don't worry too much...good luck........x

Ive recently passed my test. The bite point is easy. Just think of two cogs with little teeth. The bite point is just when these two roting cogs meet. I wouldn't worry too much as don't need to know this for the test. Hill starts can be hard, the best thing to do is just make sure you put your foot on the accelerator more then you would usually, and then raise the clutch and release hand brake. If you sense you might stall, slam your foot on the clutch as soon as possible but be careful of surrounding cars. Don't worry about other drivers. When praticing reversing round corners - If your car has a small mirror above the main wing mirror, it can be easier to use that to see.

I learnt to drive at the age of 30. I was so worried about the whole thing thats why it took so long. However its the best thing i ever did i am able to go where I want. Try and relax and enjoy it . as as soon as u pass you will be on top of the world you will be able to up and go wherever you what . You will do it ,but who is putting preasure on you. My Uncle said to me when I was doing lessons Learn to be a good driver, not Just a driver " he was right.
You know if the gears are a pain for you then drive in automatic as all nice cars come in both these days .Plus once you relax if you feel you would like to do gears you can go back and do it...
good luck I hope it goes well .. You ll be crusing before you know it ....

You can do this ! you obviously want to or you wouldn't have bought your car, ! 1st of all EVERYBODY gets nervous at one time or another, 2nd EVERYBODY driving had to learn, even your driving instructor, and to be honest alot of the people out there shouldnt be driving and wouldnt pass again if they tried, 3rd sod everybody else on the road, you are doing your best to learn safely, you have a right to learn just like everybody else. You cant hill start because you cant got to grips with the biting point-this is the point that if your pressing the accelerator instead of just revving the car actually wants to move(if your not pressing the accelerator or just lightly the car will stall)
have you thought of changing your instrutor ? they should be helping you-they get paid enough! relax you can do this! stop worrying about others and start thinking of all those places you want to drive to- i've got petrol too! been driving nearly 10 years now-best advice i had was from my instuctor-always allow for the idots !

First things first, change your driving instructor, he/she is clearly only in this for the money and isn't doing you any good.

As for "biting point"...get someone to go with you to a empty car park and just sit with the car in gear (handbrake on) and ease your foot off the clutch and gently press on the accelerator, you will feel the car start to move slightly...this is "biting point", keep the car steady at that point, slowly release the handbrake and ease off the clutch while pressing a little more on the accelerator and that's it...just practice.

Get your confidence by doing that a few times and you will be fine at hill starts. On my first hill start my instructor told me to hold the car between 10 and 20 rpm so maybe that will help you :)

Relax and good luck.

Oh sweetie I know what you mean I am almost 30 and I just got my 1st license this week. I am still terrified and really don't like to drive but I am getting better but I am still terrified. But then I think about it I have 5 kids and 1 on the way I am tired of taking the bus. So I just practice a lot. I take short drives to my kids' schools or to the store. I promise you will be fine and get it.

Try and get some practice in late at night or really early in an empty parking lot. Make sure you take someone with you though. lol. Practice start and stops, turns and backups. You can make believe your on the street, make all the necessary signals and just feel the power at your hands.

Good Luck and Drive Safely !

Your driving instructor is not explaining things in terms that you understand. Either ask for another driving instructor or ask someone that knows stick to show you how.
