You are sooooo wrong! There are lots of reasons to put in an early bid, you just have to know what you are doing:
a) it puts off other bidders who are only interested in paying the minimum amount
b) there are lots of people who watch an item then forget to actually bid, therefore if you get your bid in first you can win
c) you can get in your maximum bid first - if someone else puts in their maximum bid first then you are stuffed if it is the same or more than you were willing to pay
d) you can buy lots of random stuff for a few pence or pounds which you can then sell later for higher prices advertised or photographed better or at the right time of year etc.
e) where there is an item up for auction or buy it now, i think that bidding stops the buy it now

one reason you might bid is because by bidding on an item that has no bids you prevent the seller from being able to revise it. for example if the seller list something you want and he listed it with no reserve then It might be good to bid on it if it has no bids because he wont be able to change the pricing once your bid is placed, but other than that i agree with you, people for the most part should not keep bidding on item because all they are doing is raising the price for potiential buyers.

What they do is, decide right at the start what they are willing to pay. So they never need to go over it.
The people who bid with their emortions, in the last few seconds usually end up paying more than the item is worth.

Sometimes I know i might not be around when the listing comes up to the last few hours - or something i want and know theres a risk i might forget to bid prior to item end.

i know people who have one bids like that cuz no one else wanted it. In fact, the seller would get more money towards the end of the auction if people bid on things early.

Sometimes you have to, if you know you aren't going to be around when the auction ends. However, I do agree that early bids do tend to attract other bids.

Using ebay is dodgy its a risk, and I'd much rather buy for real and new to see what I am buying rather than use some two bit thats uploaded something on the web, for reasons being its just to risky to use that or a credit card.
I'd prefer just to stay clear off that stuff...

That's a good question. Certainly, the SELLER is thilled that it shows the world that "someone" is interested in their product.
Maybe some buyer believes that their bid will scare others away. But I doubt if that rings true. It is probably only to the Seller's advantage.
Good luck and Happy Computing!
