What most westerners do not understand is that the Japanese have nearly 10,000 years of written history. They and the mind set of their ancestors is built on the premise that they and they alone are from the land of the Gods and therefore anyone or anything not from there is below consideration. This may seem very straightforward but it is not. There are some excellent books out there that explain it, but i would try reading James Clavell's Shogun to understand the Japanese mindset. Though fictional, it is based on historical people and facts.
