I like the advice you already got, but my 2 cents worth, as a not-so-hot musician, but total worshipper of music:

Play that thang! That's what it's made for, that's what it wants you to do. The best instruments are the ones that get played. I swear!

-Tune it often and also learn to tune the guitar by ear. This will save you money by not having to buy an electric tuner and it will also be another plus for your musical abilities.
-Make sure it's clean and good-looking (to the best possible extent). Wash your hands after eating greasy foods and rub down the strings with a clean cloth or tissue. Also try not to hit it against anything too hard, this can create cracks in the paint or even cracks in the actual body of the guitar.
-Keep it in a case when not in use. A solid case is better but if you need to a gig bag is OK, just try to get a solid case soon if you don't have one.
-(Only if keeping as a collecter's item) Keep in a solid case (Plexiglas or glass) and at room temperature all the time. Also keep it out of direct sunlight or bright artificial light and don't use a cleaner on it too often, it may create streaks and other no-no's for a collecter.

well,
I'm gonna answer because I am a professional musician, and guess what? I play the guitar. these are some tips for you:
(1). Keep it well polished, no grease or dirt on the fretboard.
(2). Keep it in its case or bag when not in use.
(3). Tune it everytime before playing it.
(4). Do not lend it to any one unless they are under your supervision.

Hard Cases are an amazing thing but if you're constanly using the guitar get a fret sock for it, get a soft cloth and give your guitar a rub-down every so often

When not in use make sure you keep in it in its case and protect it from extreme temperatures. Oh yeah and don't forget to stroke it on occassion. :-)
