I've been in the US for 7 years, I still don't understand why American like to give tips for almost anything. For example, go to a restaurant, customers need to pay their dishes + taxes + tips. It's crazy. The restaurant should pay the waiter to serve customers. Why customers need to pay extra for it? Someone may say waiter earns a little; however, it's not true. A full time waiter can earn more than $3000 a month. The waiter just needs to bring dishes and asks how you feel whatever. Many people pay tips in cash, so they don't even need to pay taxes for the tips. Why people want to go to colleges? Want to make money just find a waiter job. Bartenders can make even more.

What do you think about it?

Actually busboys only get a little tips from waiters as I know in most of restaurants.

For the $2.75/ hour they earn, what I said was a restaurant should pay more for them. They offer the service should not ask customers to pay extra. Also, the low wages are fair because it's not hard as labors who work under heavy sun, it's not like a dr. spending a lot of time to learn the skills. What I see to pay the tips about 15-20% of your dishes is unfair.

What do you think?

Two of my friends they really make more than $3000/month. I'm in IL. We tip15%-20% usually. Some people they pay more than it. I saw several times people tipped $100 for $50 dishes.

Have you ever worked as a server?

There's more to the job than bringing food and checking on guests.

And most restaurants that I've worked at the majority of guests pay with a credit card, so the guests fill in the tip line on the voucher. Those HAVE to be reported for taxes.

It's customary to tip, pure and simple.

As for you, you HAVE to be either European or Indian/Pakistani.

Well in the UK its not mandatory so I don't usually as they are just doing the job they're paid for nothing extra. Plus they're a lot more sloppy I was in TGIs & my food arrived 45mins before my friends and then when it did arrive the waitress dropped it on the floor! So unless I feel they have been exceptional the most they get from me is thank you and goodnight :) If ever someone had the cheek to ask for a tip then I'd most likely give them one on life. Besides don't they put all tips together and then split it so you don't actually know if the person you wanted will receive it.

Are you even a waiter? I was a Waitress/Bartender for years and they don't make as much as you think! And it's because of people like you why! Most states (I live in MI.) the wage for a server is $2.65/hr. and 75% of your customers don't even tip 10%. I remember working a 8 hour shift and making $50.00. That's $6.25 an hour! Whoa I'm a million-er! Right hence why I mentioned I am not a server anymore!

In the US, waitresses and the people they have to share tips with (busboys, etc.) are allowed to be paid under the minimum wage. This isn't the case in other countries. In high class restaurants they probably will be paid more, and they'll be making more in tips anyway, but that is simply not true for the majority of waitresses in smaller restaurants.

Wait staff makes $2.75 hour approximately, the rest is tips. Why do we do it, because of the low wage and tradition.
