You're right -- but 'serious' movies often portray male masturbation as a sign of depression, loneliness, existential angst or what have you. So it's always either mocked or pitied. And I can't think of an instance where female masturbation was shown as anything but a True Voyage of Self Discovery. The reason? Gender stereotypes. I can't see why else it would be so consistent.

female masturbation is less prevalent than male masturbation due to greater social taboo around female masturbation. Also, just because it's lss prevalent doesn't mean that there is a large disparity the difference could be 1 or 2%

It's just as common in both, but perhaps more 'frequent' with males, generally speaking. There are definitely exceptions for either of the sexes.
Males are technically designed to be 'always ready' sexually, whereas females have special times when they are not as ready as males would normally be.
Interestingly, human females are 'in heat' constantly, compared to other animals which have phases of sexually availability. We are a very versatile species.

In my case it is about the same. I love sex. I would have it multiple times a day if I could. When I can have sex with my partner I masturbate. There is probably only one day out of my week I am either not having sex or masturbating. I know for a fact it is the same for the men I know. maybe I am a man trapped in a female body

Studies say not. The males who do not masturbate comprise less than 1% of the post pubescent male population, according to reliable studies. The females who do not masturbate comprise just less than 50% of the female population (post pubescent) -- at least so I've read.
Why?

Being a female, that is a definite no. Men are so much more viusal than we are. But I have to agree, most of the women out there are missing out.

Definitely not. They have done studies and men think of having sex so much more than women, and it just happens that masterbation often follows the thoughts.

I don't think so because men's genitalia are external and boys are more likely to figure out that it's erogenous at a very early age.
Plus men have insatiable sex appetites.
