Can I get a Subaru WRX STI 2.5 engine to fit into a 1996 Eclipse RS? and will it be as fast as an actual STI vehicle?

Thanks

I might be possible but I don't know the dimensions of the STi's engine compartment, you also need to find a way to mount it and the transmission in there and the GSX is pretty stuffed with just a 2.0L (that hump in the hood actually allows clearance for the belt to fit). It might be worth your while if you like the 2g Eclipse to just do an engine swap from an Eagle Talon TSi or Eclipse GS. The 96 Eclipse RS has a Chrysler 2.0L engine that's much different than turbocharged engines of the 2g made by Mitsubishi. You can also add the AWD components if you want a lot of power too. Since you'd be dealing with a great amount of torque steer due to the FWD. Another thing to keep in mind is that the turbocharger on both the 1g and 2g aren't at full boost. The only issue though is it might be easier to just go out and buy an AWD Eclipse or Talon and then increase the boost after making sure its running right. But to get the most out of any Talon or Eclipse I personally suggest going to DSMTuners.com and following the advice on there. The sites geared towards the maintenance and care of the Talon and Eclipse and how to get the most performance out of them. I hope this helps a bit (and some people would actually consider it offensive to have a Subaru engine in a Mitsubishi and vice-versa...kinda like having a V8 powered RX-8).

And to Spinner: There is a 1g Eagle Talon on Yahoo! Autos with twin-engines; a front and rear. So its not entirely out of the question.

This is one swap I don't recommend.... Reason

The Pan Cake 2.5 WRX STI Turbo engine and transmission is a bit wide for the Eclipse UnIbody...

If you have unlimited funds go for it would like to see that one.
You will need a complete Tube frame built for the engine and transmission 1st...
Then modify the body to fit the Tube frame... This will cause the car to sit a little high.

If you want the power of WRX in Your Eclipse Just Find a TSI AWD Eagle or GST AWD Eclipse and put 2 together. Get the bigger Turbo, NX system and stand alone Fuel management system... And most likely blow the WRX a-way and maybe a Ferrari or a Z/28 also... Don't forget a good header and exhaust system don't make the exhaust to big 2 1/2 " to 2 3/4" will work the best...

Good Luck on your Project and if you get it done I'd like to see what it can do in the 1/4 mile....

Side note: I was woundering If someone can Modify the rear body where you could use the WRX as a rear wheel drive Eclipse and just no back seat??? It is wide enough... But no AWD forsure...

It will with some adjustments but I would rather buy the Subaru because the engine is mostly all of what the STI's price is based on.

You are an idiot. If you want a car like an STI, just buy an STI. Or you could buy an SLR McLaren and take the motor out of it and put it in your eclipse. That would be cool moron.

The motor is the most expensive part. You would be better off buying a Subaru
