First, the 76ers did NOT come from the ABA, they were in Syracuse before they came to Philly in the early 60s. Duh!
And, the Sixers in the 70s had a 9-73 team - still a record for worst team in a season.
Temple is a good college football answer.
Tampa Bay Bucs would have to be the pro football answer - they were bad for their first 10 years of existence.
The Philadelphia Phillies might be the trick answer in baseball: this season they will lose their 10,000th game - something no pro sports team has ever done. They have not been in the playoffs in over 12 years, and they are a team in a major market.
Hockey, its too hard to say - is that even a major sport anymore? Might as well talk about World Team Tennis then.

The 1987-88 Clippers ended 12-72 (not the worst, but c'mon this was already the late 80's), and finished the season 55 games out of first. On the last game of that season, which was fan appreciation night, of the 4000 people that came, over half were said to be wearing a brown paper bag over their heads. To make matters worse, the planned fireworks show malfunctioned, and alot of the fireworks ended up being duds and hit the Sports Arena ceiling. I remember people used to go to Clipper games to see THE OTHER TEAM!

The worst team in any sport ever would be any NY Ranger team between 1997 and 2006. They failed to make the NHL playoffs each year despite having one of the largest payrolls in the sport and became known as pretenders/chokers (see sweep by NJ Devils last April).

I made the sixth grade basketball group yet became very plenty a bench warmer. I performed purely in blow out video games. i became the obese toddler on the gang, no longer very coordinated or gifted. So every time I have been given in it became embarrassing to my family members.
