Download a free programme 'i-pod booster' - sorry I cant remember which site it was on now but if you do a search for i-pod tools you'll find it (or visit apple ipod forums - it should be on there). Apparently the uk ipods are sound restricted as where the USA ones arent - this programme unrestricts the volume and makes it much louder xxxxx

You can adjust the maximum volume on your ipod by going to settings - if it's set too low then turn it up
If you right click on a song track, choose info....then options...you can adjust the volume to make the song sound louder. You can also use the info area to add song lyrics and album art to jazz it up a bit :-)
