I heard that not only was it due to the eight year age difference between the two but also because of Hilary's stalker. Apparently she was really worried about the whole situation but Joel didn't think it was as big a deal as she was making it out to be. They had arguments about this often and that was another leading factor in their split.

Hilary had this stalker and she was all hyped about it and everything and paranoid too. So Joel is like "Chill out, Hilary! You spaz! You're just overreacting." (Actually overheard!) And then the stalker turns out to be an actual creep and Joel doesn't apologize. Hilary gets mad and dumps him.
