They have to work side-by-side with a physician, to get "on-the-job" training. Sometimes, internships can turn into permanent positions - the intern could be offered a position at the same facility where they did their internship credit hours.

Medical Internship is part of Medical School education. You work in a Hospital under many different Doctors and in many different medical fields.

The Intern is not paid a wage or salary. The training and education they receive is considered the payment.
