The book is called "Who Really Cares?" by Arthur C. Brooks.
I don't give a hell of a lot at present, because I'm not exactly rolling in the dough. At most I give about $400 a year, to a local benevolent association near me. (At least that's more than AL GORE gave in 2000, when he gave $300 to charity...and he's a millionaire - if Gore is any indication, then perhaps this book is right...)
Love Jack
PS: From the review of the book by T. Sowell:
"More frightening than any particular beliefs or policies is an utter lack of any sense of a need to test those beliefs and policies against hard evidence. Mistakes can be corrected by those who pay attention to facts but dogmatism will not be corrected by those who are wedded to a vision.
"One of the most pervasive political visions of our time is the vision of liberals as compassionate and conservatives as less caring. It is liberals who advocate "forgiveness" of loans to Third World countries, a "living wage" for the poor and a "safety net" for all.
"But these are all government policies -- not individual acts of compassion -- and the actual empirical consequences of such policies are of remarkably little interest to those who advocate them. Depending on what those consequences are, there may be good reasons to oppose them, so being for or against these policies may tell us nothing about who is compassionate or caring and who is not."

i saw that on 20/20 last night. i only caught the first part of it though. but i think that its a geographical thing. nothing to do with political affiliation. i live in a red state and i despise republicans. especially the ones in the media and in office. but i think that personal beliefs aside, people from the south are just more generous. and we generally do all that we can to help somebody else. if there is a fundraiser or a red cross bucket or any thing like that, you will always find somebody who wants to help out. we are less jaded than people from other regions of the country.

If the study is true,it probably has something to do with tax deductions.Maybe we'd all give more if we were all given credits. The very wealthy are not always conservative or generous.Al Gore was exposed as a tightwad some years ago.

Liberals believe in stealing from everyone through taxes and giving it to the charities in which they believe. (They usually give the money to able-bodied people who choose not to do anything for themselves.)
Conservatives believe in donating their OWN hard earned money to charities in which they believe. (Usually charities that encourage people to learn how to help themselves so that they aren't a slave to the charity for their entire lives.)
It's that simple.
