As a former fish guy, it is not something that I recommend (I do not do it anymore by the way). I recommend against it for two reasons. One, you cannot see the fish that you are buying, and two, you dont have someone that you can run to if there is a problem. LFS flks do not like it when people come in with something that they bought on the internet, and are not as likely to help you out the same way they would someone who bought a fish in the store.

If you do buy fish online, many places do have an arrive alive gaurantee, and I would make sure that they have that. Immediately after getting the fish, place them in quarantine for at least a week to make sure that they are eating and are disease free. Getting a disease in your tank can cause a major headache, and if you can deal with it before introducing your other fish to the problem, you will be much happier.

If you are hot on getting fish online, make sure that you are an experienced aquarist. If you are a beginner, you may have success, but I believe that it is worth paying a little more for someone to spend the time with you to have a healthy tank and to help ensure that your fish will be compatible with each other (which you will not get online. there is no all incllusive compatability list, and if anyone tries to sell you on one, run from them like they have the plague. It depends on fish, tank size, contents of the tank, age of the fish, etc.)

Take this for what it is worth, but I used to do aquarium sales and maintenance professionally, and I still buy my fish from the LFS where I live, and think it is a good idea. Research alot before you buy even from a LFS. WWW.REEFCENTRAL.COM is a great site which gives out free memberships. Members are pretty good about answering questions, and someone on there will have bought from what ever place you are considering. Also remember that almost everything in this hobby is an opinion so you will find many people saying many different things.

We have ordered quite a few from the internet- we only buy captive bred fish as well, not wild caught. Most of them lived. We had 1 die right after transport or was ill during. Captive bred ones are a lot stupider though- we lost 2 because they got stuck between rocks.
We actually had more problems with the fish we bought from the local pet store than online.
Just make sure you very slowly acclimate them to your tank. They are already pretty stressed, so you want to make it as easy as possible- add water drop by drop.

remember a lot of LFS are interested in only sales not quality. Live Aquaria has people there to help you a lot of the time and they have a 14 day arrive alive stay alive guarantee. I have ordered from them many times for myself and clients and have had absolutely no problems. I have about 3 LFS in the area, bought fish from each and liveaquaria is definetly the best choice i think.
