Because music industry is big business. It's all about the looks, that's what sells albums (album being a collection of work; CD, mp3, DVD etc is the format on which it is stored for playback). So, you hire "permformers" who look good, interview well, can put on a good show, then get good songrwriters to do what they do best, put them together, and you're much more likely to have a hit.

The "industry" wants stuff that will sell. If they can find a beautiful person with a great voice they are happy. Often the talented person is swept away with the quick pace of meeting with executives and learning dances or these "great new songs our people have written especially for you" and get caught up with the money that they forget about being creative for a brief moment which just snowballs until they have popped out three CD's with many #1 hits with numerous web sites dedicated to them. They lose their focus of REAL artistry. This is how a person like Bob Dilan can come along with a not so great voice but with real writing talent and be successful.

Heck some singers don't even sing anymore, they lip sync. And when the do sing the are so filtered and produced that they sound nothing like themselves. They have become icons and performers rather than artists. They are commodities and sex images. Remember Buddy Holly? Great singer and song writer but a total geek. The corporate whores who run the music business thought, "geez, what if we could get someone like Buddy to write and sing the songs, but have a hot dude up there singing them? We could make more money!" Then they chanted "MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY" for 40 minutes until one of them had to pee. Then they adjourned the meeting.

Today's "Musical Artist" is actually no more than a "Performer and Cultural Icon". This isn't true for everyone...but I know what you're talking about. If you look good, dance well, sing OK, and wear name-brand clothes, you are eligible to be a "Musical Artist".
This is a time when the music industry has been engulfed by pop-culture commercialism...we no longer know music by its composer, but rather by the popular icon that is told to sing it and star in the music-video.
I'm not remotely socialist or anti-capitalist. I love money and making lots of it. But I do agree that there are other individuals who deserve credit for their musical work who remain behind the curtains.

Some of them still do, as you do I assume?
It is such a big industry anymore that creativity is exchanged for that oh mighty dollar sign, shame! Make a buck and get out fast.
Notice all the peeps out there who sound like everyone else? At least if they are singing there own song it makes them stand out from all the rest....
A true entertainer is going to play music for money or for free in the park.....
I just sent a fella a Mic to hook up to his computer, all I asked for in exchange is to hear his music lol! I told him just send me a CD for it lol! I also did some free advertising for another for one of his CD's.
I sold on ebay a signed vinyl album to a guy. He won the auction when he paid and we were getting it ready to go I was told to look at the name and address. I looked, then went to the computer and low and behold it was the same guy on the album! He is older now of course! I put that money into buying the same vinyl album he just bought but this was in CD form and he sent me another CD for liking his music! He did (does) all of his own stuff.
Too cool I thought!!

Many people who cannot sing very well write good songs that need other singers to sing them.

It's because most music is put together by producers instead of producers scouting for talent. Not all music was "original." Meat Loaf and Heart, both were fairly famous for using song writers.

The record companies that sign these artists don't want to let them develop anymore...no patience. They want hits to recoup whatever $ they spend promoting them. Just business.
With the alternatives we have today (YouTube, burning your own CDs and distributing yourself, MySpace, etc.), you can blow by the middleman and take it straight to the street. Hopefully, more people go that route...

Most song writers can't sing. Most singers can't write. When an artist can do both, he/she is very special.

They have no real talent.
Every band I listen to, the lead singer and/or band members write all of the songs.
