China is no longer a communist foe to the west after the late Deng Xiao Peng took over the premiereship in the late seventies.
About the trade imbalance, low wage is definitely the key factor. Supporting by China's opening up with very low risk of reverting back to isolation, China attracts huge foreign direct investments constituting her to become a global manufacturing site.
Actually, the bulk profit of the trades goes to the companies carrying the brand of the goods. The Chinese manufacturers earn a very low margin of the sales. So who are reaping the profits?
Certainly, there lies a risk that the Chinese manufacturers will become smarter somedays and know how to sell direct to the world. However, branding is not an overnight task. It takes years to develop.

Red china is becoming a strong player in the industrial market in the world today. They are rolling in the dough, and with their cheap labor, they are becoming extremely financially solvent.

More and more items today are, "Made in China".

I recently won an item on eBay, Wolfgang Puck Convection oven with rotisserie, commercial grade, top of the line unit, excellent craftsmanship, . . . . . . . . Made in China.

Things they are a changing.

Well, I think communism was running out of cash. So they started trading with the USA. According to The late Sir John Templeton, trading with communist regimes is the surest way to overthrow them. I am not sure though. I think China is outwitting the USA in trade.
