Depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for a bag to go out into town with when you're shopping or something, then you should go for the messenger. However, if you want to carry a lot of stuff and carry it easily (e.g. school use) go for the backpack.
Ha! I just read some of the other answers... some people are so ignorant, aren't they? 'Ewww... r u a goth?' <-- something like that.

Seriously. I get that kind of thing all the time - I'm sure you're sick of it too. It can really get up your #~@! sometimes. I'll bet these people are the kinds of people that WILL !!!DIE!!! if they don't have the latest Gucci handbag or the latest Parfum de Chanel. Sad, materialistic little people whose minds are incapable of opening even one tiny little bit.
Sorry, bitter rant. But my point is - a girl who DOESN'T follow fashion but DOESN'T avoid it either always gets the short straw and has hundreds of different labels, none of which work.
I've had: punk; prep; skater; goth; emo; art freak; popular.
Eh.

ANYWAYS! Generally I prefer the messenger. But, as I've said, it really does depend on circumstances.

Both are nice, it depends on your personality, if you're more feminine go with the purse whilst if you're more laid back I recommend the backpack. Personally I prefer the backpack.

I have always like messanger bags. THe backpack looks vibrant and extremely childlike.

to be honest, i wouldn't pay money for either but I'm not the one who's got to carry it around & it would be a boring world if everyone had the same tastes.
