A contraction is a shortened form of a word or group of words, with the omitted letters often replaced in written English by an apostrophe, as e'er for ever, isn't for is not, dep't for department.
All contractions have apostrophes (') in them to replace a letter. But yeah, you get the picture lol.

A contraction is (grammar) a shortened word or phrase, with the missing letters represented by the apostrophe. A couple of examples are below:
aren't = are not
don't = do not
you're = you are
they're = they are
isn't= is not
he'll = he will
she'll = she will
I'll = I will
can't = can not
wouldn't = would not
shouldn't = should not
haven't = have not

When two words get pushed together and you remove 2 of the letters add an apostrophe and form a new word. Such as cannot becomes can't, would not becomes won't and so and so on.

It's what's used when two words are combined. Look at the first two words of the preceding sentence.
It's = it is
what's = what is.
