Hi. I want to start a band playing rock and punk music but I don't know how. I've started several before but the others haven't been committed. I am deadly serious and I really want to be a musician when I'm older. But my friends aren't musically talented when it comes to guitars and drums, and I don't want to put up signs because I'd just find it embarrassing and anyway, I don't want creepy strangers to come to an audition - I'm too young to be doing that! Please help!

What I would do if I were you is put an ad in the local paper saying punk/rock musicians wanted. Only serious inquiries wanted for audition. Then when they call and show up sit down with them and ask them questions about what sort of music they are into and what direction you want to go with the band. Also make it clear when practice is and they understand that they will all have to split some of the cost when upgrading or purchasing new gear. It is a little better to have people with similar musical interests but also a little different that way not all your originals that you make up yourselves sound the same. Good luck with your band and hope this helped you out a little.

Take your time. Dont stress out. If you really have a drive, good thing will happen. I've been in this band with a friend for about 5 years now...and we just cant find anything solid with others, but we have each other. We write when ever we can, but we know if we want to do this for a living, somethings else has got to happen.

A friend of mine is in a pretty popular local band and he says it may take up to 10 years before something happens. Its good that you're young then haha. But ya, keep going at it.

Hopefully I'll be going to one of your shows in 5 years or so!

join someone else's band before you start your own - that alone will measure your level of committment by working with total strangers. or sit in on sessions with other bands to get a feel for how they work together. biggest thing you have to keep in your head, you don't want to waste your time or someone else's time so measure yourself before you start any project on your own.

try posting to craigslist.org in your area. reference your age, musical interests, skill level and gear. then, e-mail EVERYONE that responds, whether you're interested in their music or not. If not, be polite. If so, keep talking until you feel comfortable, and try to set up time and space to play. Just take your time....no need to rush good music.

Try MySpace if you haven't already. Lots of musical networking opportunities there.
