My best friend is a straight guy we've been bessies since nursery
I'm straight too I was best woman when he got married and he is my daughters god father..There's never been any physical chemistry between us we just bonded as buddys from the day we met we'll be life long friends..

I prove wrong. I have had a platonic friendship with my college friend-girl since 1982. Well for the friendship to have endure all those ages there has been love (philo love that is.)

With the understanding that friendship is also a type of love in itself, that is something which is untrue.
I imagine Oscar wrote it for one of his characters to say.

Maybe that was true for Oscar (a Victorian Gay) but the times have changed in quite a few ways since and it certainly isn't true in my case.

Makes you wonder about what old Oscar meant by 'friendship.'

Men are confused. They're conflicted. They want a woman who's their intellectual equal, but they're afraid of women like that.
They want a woman they can dominate, but then they hate her for being weak. It's an ambivalence that goes back to a man's relationship with his mother. Source of his life, centre of his universe, object of both his fear, his love and his relationship with a woman.

Oscar Wilde was wrong. My best friend is male, and we do just fine; I can talk about anything with him with no consequences, blame, or contempt.
