detroit has been doing the thanksgiving game since the 30s, and then in the mid 60s pete rozelle wanted to add another game on that day. no teams were smart enough to take the nfl up on that except dallas. teams were leery of having to host a game, use their employees when they thought they should be with their families, etc., not having the foresight to think that the thanksgiving games would become as huge as they have. the cowboys have hosted the second thanksgiving game since 1966 except for 1975 and 1977 when that game went to the mighty st. louis cardinals. the cards lost their 2 thanksgiving games to the bills and dolphins. otherwise, it has been dallas' game.

now all the other teams got the dollar signs in their eyes and have whined about not getting a thanksgiving game. the nfl has screwed alot of stuff up (re:officiating, using instant replay and delaying games for 15 minutes+, no celebration rule, having a superbowl in detroit, etc.), but have been smart enough to honor the fact that detroit and dallas accepted the thanksgiving games when all the other teams were too good to take it. could care less about detroit but there is no question that dallas should have the right to host that celebratory spectacle every year no matter how much other teams complain and bellyache.

Tradition for Detroit, as they played the first one years ago, back in the 1930s I believe. Dallas began playing on Thanksgiving in 1966, by this article:

Pretty much because it is a tradition. I also believe that they actually played the first thanksgiving day game but I am not sure.

Because they SUCKED so BAD in the past, they were the only teams DESPERATE enough to play on Thanksgiving, when nobody else would. Those two teams were absolutely STARVED for attention, 'cause NO one could bear to watch them try to play football.
