Like others have said, Xanax (alprazolam) is a Benzo. Its used mainly for anxiety. You've already heard about the side effects, so instead I will tell you my experience. I suffer from Panic and Depression. I was prescribed Xanax 10 years ago (I was just 16 years old). At first it was great, mostly because it would just knock me out. The problem is that your body builds up a tolerance to it, and you start to need more of the drug for it to continue to have the same effect. It is highly addictive, even if your body isnt craving it, your mind will. Also after using it for a while, the drug starts to give you side effects that mimic the symptoms it is supposed to prevent.
When I decided I no longer wanted to be on it, I started detoxing off it, with support from proper authroities. I was on 3mg Xanax daily. To detox, they switched me to Valium (diazepam) as it is easier to come off gradually. At the start of detox I was on 35mg of Valium a day, and it still wasn't equivilent to the Xanax. Detox was hell, with numerous physical symptoms, not to mention the hallicunations and other mental symptoms.
I am not telling you this to scare you, I just want you to stop and make an informed decision about the medication. These days I am off Benzo's entirely. I have sought out NATURAL alternatives, such as Bach Rescue Remedy, and homeopathic remedies. I have made the decision to never go down the Benzo path again, and if I had my time over, I would not have let them give them in the first place.
Seriously weigh up your options. Has the doctor prescribed it for a good enough reason? Have you, or are you wiling to try natural alternatives? Are they an occassional drug, used to help you sleep or something, or is it intended that you will be on Xanax for a period of time?

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Xanax contains alprazolam. Alprazolam is a superb anti-anxiety drug. It does actually make you unworried. It shields your mind from negative thoughts and feelings. You feel " immune " ; it's a very-powerful mind- shield. Since you have taken / will take 5 ml. of Xanax today, you will feel sleepy, but totally-unworried. It gets absorbed in your blood very-quickly. You can experience a " new " you - a person who isn't anxious. Caution : this ingredient, alprazolam, is extremely-addictive. And never take it with any anti-histaminic or alcohol. If today is the first day of your Xanax-treatment, lie down for a half-hour, or one hour, to get rid of its sleepy side-effects. Slowly, after a week or ten days, you will get used to the sleep ; you won't feel drowsy. Also, please remember : the best antidote to the sleepy effects is tea, or coffee. Okay, to answer you directly : Xanax will make you extremely-happy today.

xanax (alprazolam) is typically used to treat anxiety or panic disorder. it is a short acting benzodiazepine. side effects can include drowsiness, fainting, dry mouth, headaches, and others. if you have any questions talk with your doctor or pharmacist. to add to "bess", it is difficult to overdose on xanax alone, but if used with alcohol it is extremely dangerous, and can cause heart problems, seizures, and death.

Xanax is for anxiety. It is highly addictive both mentally and physically. Unless you throw up and choke on vomit you can't OD as my friend took 90 blue ones and they didn't even pump her stomach and said that you can't OD but I still think that doctors are right to be so careful in writing Rx for them as she still takes them and could not breast feed her baby because she was on them and her suicide attempt was 10 years ago.
