Does it really pay off? I am a 45yr old female, happily married but with no job at the moment. I am getting into a rut and starting to feel really low. I need contact with people and am a good listener so I do class myself as a peoples person.
I have learned that it could lead to maybe something permanent, can anyone tell me if they have had any experience with this?

I've done volunteer work through the it4communites scheme, it really helped me pick myself up, when I had been in a rut. It's really good fun, fullfilling and you can end up with a lot of new friends.
It's all good experience that you can put on your CV and you can feel like your making a difference to peoples lives.

When my previous employer refused to give me a reference, the people I was doing the volunteer work gave me one, which was the difference between me getting or not getting my next job.

I know the feeling I am on the same boat I am unemployed and due to my current cirucumstances I may need to look at this.

I have worked for three firms voluntarily and work with my local Police as a volunteer and it does have fringe benefits it can lead on to permanent employment dependant on the employer and if a position arised that they felt you would be an asset to their team providing your good at the job thats assuming but yes it can lead on to future employment....

There is no guarantee it will lead to any permanent position but it is incredibly rewarding and you will meet so many new contacts then who knows what doors will open up for you. Go for it and good luck.

Volunteering is an excellent way to get out and make new contacts and if it doesn't work out, you can still put the experience on your resume

Volunteering is great. I do volunteer work at my local Oxfam. You should go down and check it out. I takes hardly any time to get going, and working hours are totally flexible. Its fun too, plus you get first picks on anything that comes in!

It's more blessed to give than to receive. Paying your time forward is a definite winner. Also looks good on resume if you want to go that route. Will make good friends and wonderful memories.

God Bless You!

Good for you; not enough people are selfless enough to volunteer their time. If you're in London, contact the Kensington Charity Centre, where I volunteer. It adds to your CV, gives you skills, you meet people, you use your time constructively..it's all great!!
