I have a dell Inspiron laptop from 2001 that just went to a black screen. I hit the power button to turn it on and it starts its usualy fan noise and all the buttons turn green like they are working, but the screen is black and blank. I figured that some bulb went out after 5 years of use, but i really don't know and I thought someone on here might know.

I have an IBM and the lid tight to open, putting pressure in the lower corners at the Hinges. It get now where I have to slap it sometimes on the back of the screen for it to work. Many Laptops use a Cable to go from the board to the LCD Screen, over time from opening and closing it works the cable and a few wires break, or it have trouble where it plug onto the board. All I know.

try reinstalling the driver before you pay to have it looked at (one of the CDs that came with the computer will have the monitor driver on it). this probably is not the problem, but it won't hurt to check before you shell out your $$$.
