The first nuclear bombs were created in the United States, by an international team including many displaced émigré scientists from central Europe with assistance from the United Kingdom and Canada, during World War II as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project. While the first bombs were developed primarily out of fear that Nazi Germany would develop them first, they were eventually used against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The Soviet Union developed and tested their first nuclear bomb in 1949, based partially on information obtained from Soviet espionage in the United States. Both the U.S. and USSR would go on to develop bombs powered by nuclear fusion (hydrogen bombs) by the mid-1950s. With the invention of reliable rocketry during the 1960s, it became possible for nuclear bombs to be delivered anywhere in the world on a very short notice, and the two Cold War superpowers adopted a strategy of deterrence to maintain a shaky peace.

The first one was exploded in New Mexico on July 20, 1945. Of course, development had been going on for several years, at a cost of about 2 billion dollars -- over 50 billion in today's money.

the fourties. it was an experimental weapon, and they had no idea how it would affect the environment. some people even believed that it could destroy the world, and some people still do! the gov. dropped the a-bomb on japan, not really knowing what damage it would cause. they used the war as an excuse to drop the bomb on japan.... as a then-secret experiment. the japanese were like lab rats for the american gov. and still are. the american gov. are also doing illegal experiments on the puerto ricans as well, killing hundreds and a daily basis.... our gov. is very imperialistic!!! it is communist, and it uses democracy as a disguise!

Quoting is ok, but you need to give your source!
