Most people go along with whom ever informs them; since capitalism is dependant on a mass of ignorants to rob for the benefit of one person, it is in that persons interest to apply the best marketing and 'spin' that money can buy to convince lesser minded poorer people that capitalism is the way.
In fairness it is the way if you desire a very selfish world where your aim is to impoverish friends and family for materialistic gain(cause if you don't do this, another capitalist will).
Most all the capitalist that I know, are really just very mis-informed socialists that have had their feeble minds convinced that their relative poverty makes them a capitalist because they have a little money. This protects those with serious money.
I think BOTH systems are idealist, two extremes of life that need each other. The rich should not allowed to be SOOOO rich and the poor should not be SOOOO poor. The world should be less selfish and realise that we need each other and can work together for a common good, so that we can ALL be comfortable!
France and England (to name but two countries) have had socialist Governments that improved the lot of ALOT of their population, we are not talking communism here (china for example), we are talking SOCIALISM!
It is interesting to note the answers above that claim capitalism a success, these people either don't leave their private islands to experience what happens in the REAL World, or have really been got at by REAL capitalists, pleeeease people, come on......wake up; you think a few thousand makes you a capitalist? The club is a little more exclusive than that and taking advantage of YOU!

They are the same thing: Socialism is state capitalism, it is really SocialisTism--Party oligarchy. CapitalisTism is communism for the rich, who claim they create everything, just like God. These misleading but prestigious ideas all come from the children of the rich. Outlaw their privileges and they will be powerless to control our minds. Society will not be free until the son of a millionaire has just as much of a chance to become a blue-collar worker as the son of a blue-collar worker does. Quit letting the spoiled and sheltered define the debate.

Capatalism has historically made things bettre, it helped introduce democracy and gave the working class's a chance to organise themselves - and as to the USSR they weren't socialist, they were oppressive authoratarian and undemocratic they had a system which took the worst aspects of both socialism and capatalism and produced a hybrid worst than both. I believe that today socialism is the better system for the majorty, capatalism exploits ppl and its sole purpose is profit, social democracy improves this but still falls short. Socalism allows ppl to work, not for profit or greed, but for the good of everyone, it brings ppl together to create a better society and better world for all based on equality justice and peace.

How on earth do people think an economy based on socialism is going to better then capitalism's, it's absurd. Why don't those complaining of capitalism move to Cuba? or North Korea? I'm sure they'll love queueing up for their daily rationed bread.
It's a meritocratic west we live in. If you work hard enough maybe you will be able to enjoy the money too.

Neither is true or the solution.
Feudalism was an extremely successfull system as a means of barter exchange.
Taking all systems current or future the only one that will be successful is one that can achieve "fair distribution of wealth" if it can ever be achieved.
The problem is by who and how the "fair distribution of wealth" is managed.
The history of humankind and its actions is not very assuring.
Unfortunaly for the "ordinary Joe" you mention - Absolute power corrupts Absolutely.

Ask the Russians how well that worked out.
"Mass graves have turned up periodically in various places around the former Soviet Union since it collapsed in 1991. Just this summer, a Ukrainian chapter of Memorial announced the discovery of 225 bodies of people apparently killed by Soviet secret police in a monastery near the western city of Lviv."
"About 7,000 people in the region around what was then known as Leningrad disappeared in Stalin's purges from 1930 to 1936 and nearly 40,000 more were killed from August to November 1937, the peak of the terror, according to Memorial. Thousands were buried in a cemetery discovered a decade ago in the village of Levashevo, but relatives of victims had long believed that Stalin's executioners took most of the political prisoners to the Rzhevsk army range in Toksovo, just north of Leningrad, where they were shot and buried."
~*~*~*~
"Stalin's Purges
Summary
Under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin, tens of millions of ordinary individuals were executed or imprisoned in labour camps that were little more than death camps. Perceived political orientation was the key variable in these mass atrocities. But gender played an important role, and in many respects the Purge period of Soviet history can be considered the worst gendercide of the twentieth century."

Obviously...?? Hardly.
Why don't you compare the poor and "average Joe's" in Socialist countries to those in capitalist countries.
You will find that although there is a lot of disparity in the capitalist countries, at least their people aren't starving. Please do a little research before you go on a rant.
By the way, those who support socialism really amuse me.

global capitalism gives average joes the opportunity to get rich.
global socialism ensures that average joes STAY average joes.
think about it. who would want to spend 8 years in college and spend countless hours studying to make the same amount of money as a garbage man?

capitalism only works to fill the pockets of capitalists.
socialism gives people trousers, and it fills their belly... and empties their pockets...
one only looks after itself
the other looks after everyone..from teh cradle to the grave.
old merchants who made millions always created hospitals, libraries, and schools..and universities with their wealth... they gave back to teh communities they were engaged in. (cabury was a social landlord... he needed healthy educated workers, and he built bournville village in birmingham... pure socialism.
what do the likes of bill gates do... build No1 microsoft way in seattle... and become so obscenely rich... whilst his neighbours starve in teh most affluent country in teh world...
socialism only fails in that it doesnt make one man rich and the other poor.
