Because people think that the only way they can get someone to like them. Trust me sex is over rated...People only do it for attention and not because they want to do it with the person the love or like but because they want to get attention and say that they finally got to do it with someone they like or something relevent to that..

The reason the world is obsessed with sex, is two fold.
1) the meaning of life is to reproduce. Everyone gene in our bodies wants to reproduce itself.
2) society makes having sex more difficult than nature said it should.
So these two things put together makes us obsessed with sex.
While we can't go around having sex when ever we see a pretty woman, or good looking guy (if you are a female). Then seeing it on TV reading about it in romance novels, etc fill the need.

I honestly don't know why but I do know that humans, lions and monkeys are the only animals that have sex for the enjoyment of it. A male lion will kill his cubs in order to bring the female back into heat so he can mate her again. Figure that out. But as for us humans, well, I enjoy sex, but I enjoy making love better. Yes there is a difference. Sex is with someone you like or even a total stranger where as making love is with that special person that you can't live without.

Maybe because it feels pleasurable, it excites the primeval passions and instincts in man, to also sometimes an avenue to help fight the inner loneliness that some of us have inside, sometimes it because we want to share something intimate with someone you care for... it can be one or several of these reasons, but we are also pre-writed to desire sex. It is listed as one of Maslows needs in his hierarchy of needs. It the driving force according to Sigmund Freud. Yes, Jung contradicts Freud but we cannot altogether eliminate Freud assumptions of our psychology.
