I tried everything with my teens... and it really irked me when they took dishes down to the basement (where they hang out) and up to their rooms.
What finally got their attention was when I didn't do anything for 2-3 weeks. I didn't clean up after them, I didn't collect dishes or glasses... and Guess what? if they wanted a drink... they would have to bring it up and since they brought up one, they brought it all... and filled and ran the dishwasher w/o being asked! Isn't that amazing? Now they clean the kitchen and I'm the one empting the dishwasher since the did so much on their own. The first few weeks are aggrevating, but ultimately satisfying. Towards the end, I was thinking and I and my husband were going to have to start to use paper cups, but they came around just in time. Just bite your tongue and suffer for a few weeks of an utter mess. Best of luck.

clean as you go, that is the best rule ever! Then grownups are harping at you for making a mess! I'm a mom, this is a good rule!
