Knowing who your target is. Too many times people have a great product and great communications skills, but they do not know who their customers are and they fail. One obvious example is that if you wish to sell $100,000 business management systems, your target is Fortune 1000 firms. Then to further TARGET your marketing, you need to determine who the buyer is within the Fortune firm. If it is a financial system, then only a CFO would be able to buy it. If the product is a $2 wring tone, then your target is 12 year olds with jobs. That is not top say you will refuse to sell outside your target, but it wil be less likely.

What those guys said is right. Plus, you should know that finding out everything about your target is at the core of any marketing strategy. You start by having both the core target (usually sex, age group, and sometimes income or geography) and general target (a bit larger than your target, so that if your core is guys 12-18, in urban areas, your target may be 8-21 guys everywhere).

You then need to know how to reach your target. What are their favorite web sites, tv shows, magazines, etc. Attitudes. Fears. Desires. Average disposable income in your category. That kind of thing. (Favorite bands and actors is also a good clue as to where their heads are at, if they're a younger market (and they usually are)).

Then, you find out what they think of your product or service and your competition's product or service.

Then, you figure out what it is about your product or service that is unique to you and is important to your target. It could be an aspect of the product that does something that the competition doesn't. Or it could be a lower price. Or it could be just better value or better quality. More appealing color. "Longer lasting." You name it. Just make sure that your target NEEDS IT or WANTS IT.

target marketing is any marketing communication that is aimed at a very specific audience. For example if you sell professional lawn mowers, your target audience would be professional landscapers. They are your target market. So when you buy a list of landscapers and mail them all an advertisement or brochure, you are target marketing. If you also have a home use line of mowers, you can target homeowners.
