Generally, it is frowned upon to cite wikipedia as a source, because it can be edited by anyone. I can edit wikipedia and write any garbage I want, and it can be a total lie. I've seen professors laugh at students who try to use wikipedia as a solid source of info and cite it in their bibliography. Use it as a way of finding reputable sources. Usually there are links at the bottom of pages on there that will take you to solid sources.

I wouldn't use Wikipedia as a source for any type of research.
Wikipedia is a self policing reference source that people can make changes to at whim, which does not make for a consistently reliable sole point of reference.

If I were you, I would use Wikipedia to hunt down other more substantial reference sources. Most Wikipedia posts have short bibliographies at the end. That way you can go to that link, get the info from the (hopefully reputable) horses mouth, and then use the bibliography link as your citation.

If I was still TAing/Reading for a history class I would take your wikipedia sourcing and flog you in front of the whole class/section because Wikipedia is a not considered a respectable source to which to cite from. Almost anything off the internet besides published works placed online in its entirety cannot be considered an relevant source because it is not subject to scrutiny by professionals and peers. Look at the source which is cited in Wikipedia and continue your search from there, and keeping searching until you have found something concrete, or just keep off your bum and go to the library and look in there.

find a reputable source and cite it instead
if you use Wikipedia to help you understand something, then take the key words from the Wikipedia article and use them to do a journal search.

You don't really mean to use it as a reliable source for a paper? Duh, Wikipedia is a horrible source... anyone can post information (in my class, even if it was cited correctly, you'd lose points!) Go get some legit info!
