It is best to travel with someone you know who is Russian, but from United States, and so he(she) knows both languages.

You should talk to Americans who have done it, and they will give you the most important tips.

You may actually have the time of your life there.

I have traveled t Russia and I would not recommend it if you do not speak the language. Most of the people speak little or no English. A local can tell you where to go and where not to go . Plus can give you knowledge of the place you are visiting.
I have been to some of the rural area and was with some who had local knowledge and would not consider going there without someone from Russia who spoke very good English.

You should be fine, especially if you speak some Russian. Just don't take any stupid risks (acting like an obvious tourist, flashing cash around, wondering around late at night on your own). Travelling around Russia alone is ok. Of course, things happen to people sometimes but that's bad luck, not inevitability. I travelled from Vladivostok to Estonia alone and i'm a girl. Have fun!

"Bad people" (aka street thugs) are found mostly in large cities, which are a perfect target-rich environment. The countryside is pretty docile, although accommodations can be hard to find. You do need to speak the language or have a Russian-speaking companion.
