Well he was their first marquee player along with Lou Gehrig. The big deal was that Boston traded him to the Yankees and then began the Curse of the Bambino.

Yes, the Yankees did not win their first pennant until 1921, the year after Ruth joined the team. They won pennants in 1921, 22 and 23, also in 26, 27 and 28...their final pennant with Ruth was won in 1932.... they won the series in 1923, 27, 28 and 32.
Ruth was a superstar in baseball for 10 years before Gehrig came into the league in 1925.
Ruth averaged over 46 HR per year during the 1920s, setting an breaking the season HR record several times (hitting 29 in 1919 with the Red Sox, topping that with 54 in 1920, then 59 in 1921, and finally breaking that record in 1927 with 60 HRs).
When Ruth retired in 1935 with 714 HR's, Lou Gehrig was 2nd on the all time HR list at that time, with 378.
Twice, Ruth hit 3 HRs in one World Series game.
Including his years with the Red Sox, Ruth played in 10 World Series, winning seven of them (he won 3 out of 3 with the Red Sox in 1915, 16 and 18).
He was influential not only with the Yankees, but also due to his leaving the Red Sox...the Red Sox won 5 of the first 15 World Series that were played (they won in 1903, 1912 and then they won with Ruth in 15, 16 and 18)... After Ruth left them, they did not win another world Series until 2004.

Excluding the famous and popular Willie Keeler who played for the Yankees in his last years, the Yankees' first "star" who transcended local popularity was Hal Chase in the late 1900s, early 1910s. Although he turned out to be a crooked player, he was a hitting and fielding star and a national name. The Yankees, unfortunately, were a fairly mediocre team in that era and not the gate attraction that they became in the Ruth era.

There were many before Ruth, but they didn't get the coverage he got. With the media and the new stadium of Ruth's time he got all the glory.
