I heard that companies like Dell actually loose money on ultra-cheap desktop machines (such as $200 ones), is this true?

There are several reasons:

1. Cheap computers come with several trial or basic software versions (Virus Scan, AOL, CD Writer). Vendors of these software products pay PC vendors to place their trial versions on the desktop prominently in the hope that if you like it you'll upgrade.
2. Cheap desktops use older hardware that is already obsolete in someway in the mainstream. For example, low capacity, slower hard disk, slower processor, slower graphics card.

Your griping about dropping $2 hundred.00 ! it really is no longer something compared to the loses many others incur. what's to forgive, you took a danger and it did not pan out. when I used to ordinary the slots , dropping 2- 3 hundred became a person-friendly loses , and sensible there became a pair impressive wins yet i'd finally end up giving all of it decrease back and extra. Now i do not gamble in any respect and recovered my monetary company account. stay away guy , it really is a sucker shot . Took me dropping $5000.00 to rouse ! You discovered by purely dropping $2 hundred.00.

No. But if you just take the $200 machine you get crap. They make a little money on the initial sale, but they count on the upgrades to make the most money.

no this isn't true... the overall configuration of this comps are worth appropriately. infact soon there is to be a launch of $100 laptop with exceptional battery life but again the processor, operating system and range of operation will make this venture still profitable...read about olpc on wikipaedia.
