Apparently, she was the one who asked to leave. Rumors state that she found a weekly show too demanding. Add in the complications that her honey was/is director Eduardo Ponti who is based in Europe. The decision to kill her was pure Bellisario (the show's producer). He decided it would be more dramatic.
Since then she's done Mission Impossible III and the tv show "The Nine". She's also gotten married to the above mentioned Ponti and had a kid - Lucia Sofia Ponti.

Looks like she asked to leave. No reason. And rumored that she was the one that wanted to die on the show.
