Spent $4000 on a trip to Jamaica and it was a nightmare--- was offered drugs about every half hour, food tasted good but kept making me sick, and the drinks did not taste the same (ordered a margarita, and they put like 7 different types of alcohol in it)--- did anyone else have these same horror stories or was your experience good?

Okay people I am not trying to diss Jamaica, no I wasn't forced to buy drugs but in America people don't just come around trying to sell you drugs. And even if you tell the locals no they are persistant (ex: hey lady you want to buy some weed, how about exstacy....), I have been to alot of places in the US and never have I been to a place like Jamaica. I did say the food was good but it made me sick and was wanting to get the opinions of others (tourist).... so before you decide to answer don't take it personal!!!

Went to Jamaica for my honeymoon (July 2005). We will NOT return. Had the same experience you did. We spent a week at Sandals Dunns River Falls. We couldn't go in the water because locals would swim up to you and try to sell drugs and beads. Very annoying. We were even offered dope by the bartenders at Sandals. Two words ... NEVER AGAIN!

OKAY here goes my 2.5 cents worth.
1 I love Jamaica.I have been there many times. AND will be there as of DEC 30Th again.
2. Yes there is drugs. SO What. I have been offered drugs by strangers right here in Minnesota.
3. Did you try and meet any of the Locals. They are an extremely friendly People. Much friendlier then the People in any American tourist area.
4. You were in one of the biggest touristy area's of the Island . 2nd only to Montego Bay. ( my Opinion)
5. Try going to Las Vegas. You can walk down the street there and have hundreds of fliers thrown at you for sex.
even the guys walking and Holding hands with their significant other does not stop this from Happening.
6. One other thing I noticed. The people at some of the resorts like to tell their guests that it is unsafe to go of the resort property.
this does 2 things.
1 makes people affraid and 2 Makes them Spend their money at the resorts shops and not somewhere else..
so guess what the resorts shops have increased sales.
7. Back in the 60's Negril was home to Flower children they are the ones who really started the drug trade in Jamaica. ( So I guess in a way Americans are responsible.)
8 By the way I go to Negril. the sunsets are unmatched to any other Place.
I am former Navy and have seen sunsets all over the world.
I am sorry that you had a bad experience.
Just remember when you travel to another country it is going to be different. And if it was not different there would be no fun in that at all.

Ok first poster, very funny stealing from uncyclopedia.org ( a wikipedia parody site) and not citing the source. SAD.
To the asker, one big HUSH. Next time bring Pepto, the drinks taste the same like what? My dear you do realize you are visiting a FOREIGN country.
Im sure wherever you are from the locals would love to have 7 different kinds of alcohol in their drinks (more punch for the buck, you know.)
I have never heard any one complain as you have, those are NOT horror stories. Obviously Jamaica does something right as person come in droves daily, if persons were experiencing "these same horror stories" the tourist destinations would be ghost towns!!!!

As a Jamaican I must apologize if you had a bad vacation.
I am not sure where exactly you vacationed but it does sound rather seedy.
it is true that Jamaicans indulge in cannabis use quite a bit (certainly not as much as I experienced in NYC annd other major US cities.)
What all potential visitors must realize is that they are visiting a third world country whre systems (legal etc.) dont work quite as they should. things thus tend to be a little(or alot) more laid back, and not all crimes a efficiently investigated or prosecuted.
interestingly enough many many tourists visit Jamaica for these reasons , to let their hair down and to buy weed! Jamaica has the best I hear(never smoked it (any) myself)
A friend of mine from Nigeria says Jamaica is a tame comparison to many other third world countries.
there will always be a few unscrupulous persons who end up ruining our good name.
there are hundred of properties to choose from so dont use one experience to judge the whole island.
If you could get to know some Jamaicans there in (the states?) let them suggest the best vacation spots thats always a good idea.
I find Jamaicans to be very friendly helpful people.
Please report such incidents to the Jamaica Tourist Board.

So???????
You spent $4000 on a trip and did not enjoy yourself. Whose fault is that? You said that you were offered drugs every half hour. Were you forced to take drugs? I am left to think that where ever you are from there is no drugs there, right? And so what if there was 7 different types of alcohol in the magarita??????
What is the issue?

We have been there 2 times and are going back in 3 weeks over Christmas and New Years. First of all, you stayed in a touristy area. If you got out of the "compound" and took the time to talk to people and understand the way of life there, you might have a different perspective. This is a very poor country and this is the way people make a living. When you are offered something you are not interested in all you have t odo is say "No Thanks". It is all about giving and getting respect in Jamaica. All of my experiences were great. I would move there in a heart beat.

America isn't so nice of a place either. This country probably has more drugs than any other. You spend $4000 is that suppose to mean something. The reason you had a bad time is your fault because there are numerous places to have a good time. You seem as though your OVER exaggerating.

Jamaica is a small quark island in the Caribbean Sea. It was discovered sometime in the late 20th century by a crew of African explorers led by Rodney King and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. 4 out of 5 scientists believe that it is actually not an island, but a distant moon of Jupiter. Jamaica is best known as the source of what many consider to be the greatest joke in the English Language, if not any language:
'My wife just went to the West Indies this year.'
'Oh, Jamaica?'
'No, she went of her own accord'
Since royalties from this joke produce 56% of Jamaica's GNP, Jamaicans have long been on the lookout for another, better joke. Whilst several amusing bon mots have been developed concerning cricket, limbo dancing, Sean Paul, Rastafarians, marijuana and the difficulty incured in finding a taxi in Kingston on a Saturday night, Jamaicans have yet to top the she-went-of-her-own-accord gag.
In recent years, Indonesia has tried to top this joke with one of their own:
'My wife went to the East Indies this year.'
'Oh, Djakarta?'
'Why yes, I used a wheelbarrow'
However, leading joke critics consider this joke 'just sad'.
The Jamaican Embassy in the U.S. is, strangely enough, located in Hilton Head, South Carolina. It is called "Jamaican Me Crazy!" Very funny.
