I can think of two reasons...
1) The initial teaser (book cover, advertisement, sound byte, etc.) gives an unusual situation that the person would feel they could handle if given a chance. (They can empathize with the characters or the message)
2) Challenges their intellect, their morality, their emotions, or their needs. (All of these things give the individual an emotional response to the media which makes the book, movie, etc., more memorable thus more likely to be followed-up on by watching, listening to, or buying the item.)

So to answer your question, Emotions motivate people to act. Any kind of emotions - excitement, anger, longing...(just look at what brings the voters out of the house - only scandals can do that.)

Probably so I can compare it to my own life and see if there is something out there I'm missing out on.
