If you are good at managing people and have spare time, you can be your own general contractor. You can save up to $100,000 by cutting out the middleman and buying your own materials.
Another alternative is to buy a pre-built home. The large builders now have homes made in a factory and shipped to the site where they are put together. They don't look like "mobile" homes; you'd never know they weren't built like any other home.

1. Do some of the work yourself.
2. Ask friends to help.
3. Find someone in the area that is working on their house and talk to them about splitting the cost of some of the work to be done and/ or items to be bought.
Ex: A sales person at a flooring company would be more likely to give you a discount for more square footage bought.
4. Always ask for references when dealing with a contractor. Doing a job twice is costly.
Good Luck

If everyone lived in super tall buildings, less materials would be required to build that, than individual homes for each. This saves money and valueable resources. Nobody builds the longest bridge for the heck of it. It needs to connect 2 points that have a need for interaction. Most of the projects are not started with the purpose of being the biggest/longest/highest, they are mostly meeting a need. Usually advances in technology have allowed these structures to be built, whereas before they were impossible.

If you become your own general contractor (lot of work involved) you can save about 30% of the cost. Most large hardware stores run week end classes on jobs you can do yourself---like plumbing and tiling etc. But beware--make sure you have city code compliance. Some cities have sticky occupancy laws.

Saving money and building a house are contradictory concepts. Don't skimp on things you will only regret them later. Esp. if you sell years from now.
