Cortes' family were minor nobles in the kingdom of Castilla (Castile), a region in the center of Spain today.

They were wealthy enough to send him to university at age 14, but not wealthy for nobles. And Cortes washed out at university in two years.

He worked as a notary, and dreamed of following other young men, including a relative, to the New World in search of adventure and riches. He did make the trip as an 18 year old man in 1503.

By the time he led the expedition to Mexico, he would have been in his mid-thirties.

alas, he grew up with many unresolved issues, including, but not limited to, a severe oedipus (al) complex. as i recall, his mother was a major hottie. he refused counseling, even in the face of the intervention. we all can take a lesson from this--we know how he wound up, eh? ;-)
