My Mom is on a very tight budget (she's mentally disabled) so I usually get her clothes, shoes, slippers, some nice earrings, maybe a ring (she loves costume jewelry), perfume, lotions, body washes....things that she ordinarily couldn't afford herself.

I get them whatever thier intrests are. Two Christmas's ago my husband and I sent my Father a Christmas Post Office since he is a postal worker. I forgot what I sent my mom. I would just get a few Gift cards to your parents favorite places to eat and or shop.

My mom doesn't really use gift cards so she's tough to buy for. This year, I got her some shoes she couldn't find anywhere (I called around) but I was too excited about them and gave them to her already! :) The same with a collectable ornament she was looking for. I couldn't wait and gave it to her 2 months ago :)
I have a small list of items,... but she's SOO hard to buy for. If she wants something, she buys it.

I'm going to buy my mom an mp3 player (she likes to go walking; I think she'll enjoy that instead of the ol cd player). For my dad, I'll give him a few shirts with snaps (his favorite kind but getting harder to find). I might also bake him something since he complains about mom not cooking goodies often enough.

My parents each get a calendar(a girly calendar for my Dad and a cat calendar for my Mom) and then a gift certificate for their favorite store. All the presents get used and my parents don't get more stuff to add to their already full house!

I give my stepmother what she wants each year--gift certificates. That way, she can get whatever she likes. She actually prefers them to my picking out a regular gift. Also, I usually have some sort of pre-cooked Christmas meal delivered to her so she doesn't have to worry about cooking.

I'm just going to give them money and a nice card.
They never like anything I get them, and they don't like gift cards because they always lose them.
They are pleased and proud when I give them money bc it shows that I am doing well enough to fend for myself, with extra to give to them.
In the past, I've also taken them to see plays or musicals, because they like that too. And they enjoy being treated to an evening out without having to plan anything or do any work! :)

I got my mom a handmade collectible candle with owls on it, I got my step dad Click and Anger Management (adam sandler dvds), I got my dad an art book, and I got my step mom a desert themed carousel.
If you can't tell, my mom collects owls, my dad is an artist, my step mom collects carousels and I had no idea what to get my step dad.

Depends what they like.
If your dad is one of those rocker dads, maybe buy him an old AC-DC shirt or Beatles CD.
It really depends what kind of stuff they like, because there is a WIDE variety of things in this world!
