I have been told that newspapers are aimed at the fifth grade level. So, anything in a current paper is well withing the reading capacity of of an eleven-year old. Sixteen year olds read at the adult level, so special editing is not required for them.

Perhaps an article from a professional journal would provide information that could be put into layman's terms.
