Hiatus hernia or hiatal hernia is the protrusion (or hernia) of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm.

The symptoms include acid reflux, pains, similar to heartburn, in the chest and upper stomach.

In most patients, hiatus hernias cause no symptoms. Sometimes patients experience heartburn and regurgitation, when stomach acid refluxes back into the esophagus.

The following are possible causes or contributing factors for having an hiatal hernia:

Obesity
Poor seated posture (such as slouching)
Frequent coughing
Straining with constipation
Frequent bending over or heavy lifting
Heredity
Smoking

A hernia occurs when tissue from inside the abdomen bulges out through a weak spot in the muscles of the abdominal wall. When part of the stomach bulges upward out of the abdomen and into the chest cavity, it is called a hiatal hernia.

I have the same problem and my Doctor tells me its not serious, however, it worries me.He says there are two operations. One is keyhole surgery which he says is not that successful. The other is invasive using asort of tape to hold the two separated parts together. He doesn't recommend either as it is not pleasant or necessary . This didnt help my confidence much and I am still wondering. In England ,its not a priority operation and would take a long, long wait anyway.Hope this not too depressing. I feel I know what you are going thru.Good Luck!

I think it's when the muscles around the opening from the oesophagus into the stomach don't work and food and acid escapes and goes back up the wrong way causing heartburn and pain. I don't think it's that serious.
