For example: You know the little light that comes on when you hit NumLock? My dad thinks it will burn out fast if left on. But I tried explaining to him that it is not like the lightbulb in a lamp. He doesn't understand that there is a difference between a lightbulb and an LED. But out of curiousity, how long would it take to burn out, if left on 24/7?

LEDs have an extremely long life span: upwards of 100,000 hours.

LEDs are extremely reliable and will last a long time. Unless your keyboard is exposed to un-reasonable heat high electric current (both very unlikely in a home or office) the LED will last longer than your computer.

In fact the mechanical switches in your keyboard will start breaking down before the LED even fades.

The lights will outlast the keyboard itself. You'd probably end up with broken keys, etc., long before the LED would ever "burn out".

LED never heats up, and its life expectancy is longer than the keys on your keyboard! They will NOT burn out! :)

LED's are typically rated for at least 100,000 hours of use so you should be able to leave it on for at least 11 years without it burning out.

You will throw out the computer long before the lights go out. You assessment is correct, its not a light bulb.
