It is not true. The combination pill becomes immediately effective if you start it while on your period, or a week after if you start it when you aren't bleeding. The progestin-only pill (minipill) is also effective after a week.

A lot of women like to use backup for the first cycle. This isn't a bad idea... if you have bad side effects and go off the pill that first month and you've had unprotected sex, you might get pregnant.

As long as you start the active pills on the first day of your period, you are protected from day one.

Nothing is 100 % effective, but i would use something in addition to the pills for at least your first cycle and your Dr. should have told you what to do cause it can vary
