Yep sounds like someone has been playing with the buttons on your monitor.

Find the correct button (or menu item), widen the screen image, and then center it.

That should fix the problem.

If adjusting the screen size doesn't work, your monitor may be going bad, or the graphics card is, or even the drivers for the card are corrupted.
