Transact-SQL and PL/SQL are similar but not the same.

MS SQL relies more heavily on graphical tools to manage databases and servers; prior to Oracle 9, you managed Oracle primarily through PL/SQL.

It is far more important, therefore, in Oracle to have a thorough knowledge of the language than it is in MS SQL, especially for advanced tasks such as performance tuning.

So, while you probably could be quickly taught enough to be dangerous in PL/SQL -- about the same skill level I have -- being an Oracle DBA requires a fairly different skill set than being a SQL analyst.

Absolutely, I am taking Oracle 10g DBA certification and you need to be a good developer or at least have a good knowledge of PL/SQL to become a DBA. The simple reason is that you fix the problems that others create. if you know as much as they know, what is the difference? why will any company hire you as a DBA? I am blunt in answering, but thatz the truth my friend. I highly recommend that you take PL/ SQL (customized for Oracle) classes from some university that offers it.
